The Patriot Act Goes Through

Earlier today the Senate voted overwhelmingly to renew the USA Patriot Act, 89-10. Senators said that they "struck a better balance between privacy rights and the government's power to hunt down terrorists."

The House will consider the legislation next week, and likely pass it along to the president so he can sign it before 16 provisions of the act expire on March 10.

Depsite the delay, and although some necessary provisions of the Patriot Act were withheld, its passage must be considered a very important success for President Bush and his administration. The Patriot Act is an essential part of the GWOT, its presence ensures a more adequate defense against the forces of al Qaeda.
